Waratah ram sells for $22,000 in Adelaide

September 6, 2018

Steve and Debbie Milne from Waratah White Suffolks at Branxholme were hopeful of doing well when they took their team of 8 White Suffolk Rams to Adelaide Royal Show and Elite Stud Sale last week.

Results exceeded all expectations when Waratah 170661 was part of the winning Interbreed pair in the Lambplan Production Trade class and later sold at the Elite sale for $22,000.  He went to Michael and Julie Osborne of the Ryeview studs at Millicent in SA.

Ryeview also purchased the other ram Waratah offered at the sale – Waratah 170741 for $9000.    “Mr Osborne said they had successfully used one of the stud’s rams before.  The figures including eating quality, as well as growth, fat and muscle, suited what we were looking for – and the figures were just one spanner in the big box of tools, when we saw them, the rest fit as well, he said.”

$22,000 is the highest price Waratah White Suffolks have received for a ram.  Steve and Debbie are delighted with the results and Steve said “we feel the Lambplan Production Trade class is the big one.  It combines visual appraisal with Lambplan performance data and assessment by commercial experts on skins, structure and market suitability.  Our focus has been vindicated by the excellent prices we received at the sale for our rams.”

Waratah White Suffolks will be offering 100 rams and 30 stud ewes at their on-property sale at Branxholme on Monday the 8th October.  For more information and a catalogue visit our Sale page or contact Bernie Grant at LMB Livestock.

Waratah wins the Interbreed Lamb Production – Trade class at Adelaide Royal Show

September 5, 2018

A pen of two rams from the Waratah White Suffolk stud took out the Interbreed Lamb Production – Trade class at the Royal Adelaide Show in 2018.

In a very closely contested event Waratah scored a total of 227.77 points from the Valma Poll Dorset entry with 227.04 points.  Ramsay Park White Suffolks took out 3rd place with a total of 224.83 points.  Out of a maximum 250 points the two Waratah rams scored 119.77 out of a possible 120 for Objective measurement (this was scored using the Lambplan Trade $ index for each ram).  For Physical Assessment the Waratah rams gained 45 out of a maximum 50 points.  For Market Suitability the Waratah rams received 27 out of a possible 30 points, for Skin and Wool they received 20 out of a possible 30 points and for Breed Type they received 16 out of a possible 20 points.

Each of these sections were judged by a different expert who judged all the different breeds for their section.  The winners and second place getters for each individual breed class went on to compete in the Interbreed event.

Steve and Debbie Milne are delighted to have won this prestigious class and feel it is the most important and commercially relevant class at the show
